Personality & Traits

General Overview Toran is an intense and focussed man but is fiercely competent and dependable. His sense of duty is unshakeable, but under the slightly brooding nature he has a dry sense of humour and warm sense of loyalty to friends and colleagues. There’s a stillness and strength to him that some find grounding, but others might find unnerving. His warmth surfaces around people he trusts and he has a strong protective streak.

Growing up around non-Betazoids taught him to keep the extent of his telepathy veiled, having learnt quickly that it makes other people uncomfortable. He is troubled by his past but not consumed by it, and he channels his guilt into protecting others with an uncompromising focus. With a soldier’s pragmatism and a Betazoid’s depth, he’s known for keeping a cool head under fire. He remains deeply loyal to Starfleet and the Federation, seeing his service as paying a debt.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths:
+ Level-headed, unshakeable and tactical minded under pressure

Personal History Not much is known about Toran’s early life. Born two years before Betazed fell to the Dominion, he became an orphan of the occupation. Once Betazed was liberated, and with no known family left alive, Toran was sent to a Federation orphanage on Starbase 312. He grew up among displaced children from across the quadrant. While he only made a few personal connections, he soaked up the Federation’s ideals and decided to one day serve Starfleet to pay the debt he felt he owed them.

His focussed, serious nature set him apart as a student and led to a highly achieving young man. He applied himself with the specific goal of making it into the Academy, and by the time he applied, he presented as a credible candidate regardless of his turbulent start in life.

Despite his quiet demeanour, Toran flourished at Starfleet Academy, his tactical mind, keen Betazoid instincts and athletic prowess making him an ideal Security cadet. He graduated with honours, and having shown particular skill in crisis response and close combat scenarios, he was enrolled into an extra year of specialised combat and hazard training.

Even early on in his career, he was seen as a high-flyer that would go far in the Fleet. He built a reputation as a dependable, disciplined officer with a level head, even in the most dangerous conditions. He served with distinction aboard the USS Vanguard, earning commendations that led to a transfer to a more challenging posting on the volatile Starbase Juxta.

Then came the incident that changed everything.

Whilst stationed on the civilian heavy starbase, Toran was one of the guards responsible for perimeter security during a diplomatic event. An attendee he had cleared and allowed to pass through turned out to be a radicalised terrorist who detonated an explosive device, killing and injuring several delegates and crew.

A formal inquiry cleared Toran of any wrongdoing; the terrorist’s ID and records had been clean and authenticated by the computer, he’d passed biometric scans and had shown no suspicious behaviour. But despite the inquiry finding he had followed protocol to the letter, he couldn’t forgive himself. His instincts had twinged before the man had passed through, just once, just briefly, but he had pushed it aside in favour of following protocol and avoiding a diplomatic incident. The fact that he, as a Betazoid, had allowed him to pass through tore at his confidence and conscience.

He was transferred shortly afterward. Officially, he was commended for his conduct during the emergency response. Unofficially, the incident had cast a shadow on his previously promising career, sending the high-flyer crashing back to the ground. He buried himself with work at his new post, always the first to volunteer for high-risk missions or scenarios that involved protecting people, hoping he might be able to make up for past mistakes.

He requested a more hazardous posting and was sent to the USS Missouri. Most see a solid, reliable but intense officer when they look at Toran now, but there’s still so much more going on behind the determined features.
