Personality & Traits

General Overview Outwardly confident and extroverted, Jacob approaches most things with humour and a smile. Never lacking in belief or confidence in his professional endeavours, there have been few circumstances he's faced so far that have caused any doubt in his own ability to get the job done. This self confidence how ever, ends beyond any more superficial social relationships and has led to him avoiding any deeper commitments.

That isn't to say that he is not a good or reliable friend. To those he does allow himself to get close to, including his friends and shipmates, there is little he wouldn't do in their support should it be asked of him.
Strengths & Weaknesses A genuinely quite brilliant small unit tactician, Jacob is exceptionally good at his day job and this fact has allowed him plenty of leeway with his superiors over the years.

Betraying the stereotype that Marines are less intelligent, he has a quick mind and is a good problem solver although he lacks the patience for the more scientific persuits

Whilst his professional self confidence has led thus far to a reasonably successful career, he is deathly afraid of the idea that anyone grow close to or come to rely on him, an issue that stems from his poor relationship with his father. This also means for those who look too close without really understanding him - something hard to do due to his reluctance to allow people too close - he cam seem a little superficial.

Always happy to speak his mind, his candid honesty can be welcome on occasion but also means he is probably quite unsuited to circumstances that require a more tactful voice or political mind.

Largely unbothered by most things and quite open minded, he is rather good at ingratiating himself with most people he has encountered in his lifetime. He blends in among most groups well, owing to his willingness to go with the flow and try new things.
Ambitions Whilst Jacob enjoys his career immensely, he has never particularly harboured ambitions of progression within Starfleet and instead trusted that any promotion or advancement would come naturally so long as he continued to do his job well.

His only real goal in life at this time is to reach a natural conclusion to his career - one that results in his survival - and find a nice spot somewhere ideally with mountains in which to retire and enjoy the view.
Hobbies & Interests Jacob enjoys being outdoors for as much of his personal time as he can. Whether that is hiking or climbing through mountain ranges, swimming, surfing or sailing near a beautiful beach or river or camping somewhere with a good view of the sunrise.

Not being a particularly huge fan of holographic recreations of the outdoors, when spacebourne he has spent a significant amount of time to musical persuits, learning to play the guitar, piano and most recently the violin although he is still relatively new to the latter.

He has found cooking to be a calming interest and enjoys learning new recipes, enjoying in particular learning to prepare foods not native to Earth.

Whilst not claiming to be the biggest reader in the universe, he does have a particular interest in history - particularly that of Earth and the early Federation and has over the years collected a reasonable collection of reading material on both subjects alongside a few quite substantial cook books.

Personal History Born in the city of Portsmouth, Hampshire on the south coast of England, Jacob James Rye - affectionately nicknamed simply as JJ to those closest to him - grew up for the first thirteen years of his life in relatively difficult home circumstances. Born to an extremely loving Mother and a Father who at best was distant and at worst would turn emotionally abusive, blaming anything that went wrong in life firstly on his wife and he grew, his eldest child.

This made school initially a challenge for Jacob who spent many years rather withdrawn and quiet in his younger years and had it not been for his Mother's encouragement and love he likely would've fallen behind the others but as it was she had made it her life task to ensure her children would not suffer later in life as a result of their collective circumstances.

It didn't take long beyond his thirteenth birthday for Jacob to show the kind of man he would become. Returning home from school late due to a soccer game - a sport he had excelled at - he could hear his Father's anger long before he had opened the door to their home.

Finding his father's hand raised, drawn and prepared to strike the woman who had sacrificed already so much to protect him, Jacob interjected, "What are you doing?!" He'd screamed, conscious also of the baby sister that sat a room away, hopefully oblivious to what was occurring. The man he called father turned, moving away from his then wife and mother of his children to instead take out what ever frustrations he might've had on his boy.

He wasn't a boy any more though, not really. Whilst not all that long ago Robert might've stood a good foot above Jacob, now they stood eye to eye and as Dad drew his hand back once more it was the teenager that struck first, landing his fist square on Robert's nose and sending him clattering to the ground. "Get out," Jacob demanded of the shocked man, dragging him to the door and telling him to never return. Pulling the door open he found standing in it his uncle Connor who ensured the boy's demands were fulfilled. The serving Starfleet Marine had been called by his sister earlier in the afternoon when it had become clear to her how the day was turning.

Relief fell over the household and as the days, weeks and months passed and it became clear that Dad was not going to return, happiness and peacefulness returned to their lives.

Family rallied around the household and between Jacob and his Mother April, they agreed to renounce his Father's surname in their final act of rebellion against the man who had attempted to make their lives miserable for so long. Uncle Connor in particular made a point of helping his Nephew and Niece find their purpose and so it was of very little surprise to anybody when Jacob opted to persue a career in Uncle Connor's footsteps and even smaller a surprise when he excelled at it, much to Uncle Connor's joy in particular.

Jacob loved every minute of the basic training. Initially remaining close to home in Lympstone, Devon there was barely a moment of his time there where he wasn't in a state of glee, completing his course second in his class only to a vulcan candidate named Silek who had apparently taken Rye's stellar performance as a challenge. Whilst there were a few tense moments between the two of them, to this day they remain very strong friends.

Despite his first few assignments being to what most would consider quiet backwaters with very little activity most Marines would consider worthy of their time, Rye still managed to find ways of standing out, catching the eye of the Starfleet Special Operations executive along the way and enabling him to spend a number of years in their fine company before being returned at his own request following the birth of his own niece and nephew to regular service where he remains, still thoroughly enjoying every day he is permitted to put on the uniform.
